Sunday, March 31st is going to be one of those wonderful days of celebrations that come throughout the year. At the end of the month, it is going to be Mother’s Day and families across the UK will be taking part in this celebration of a mother’s love for her children.
Traditionally known as Mothering Sunday, it is a day that is often celebrated in churches because of the value of a mother to the family. It’s one of the services we look forward to and there are so many bible verses that can be used on this special day.
We believe that being a mother is one of the most important tasks and contributions to society that any woman can make. As christians, we celebrate the impact that a mother can have on her child and the opportunity she also has to sow the seeds of the gospel in a new generation.
The bible is full of women who are important encouragements to the mums of today. Providing support and guidance to their children, filled with wisdom to set her children on the right path. There are many bible verses that honour mothers and their task.
Here are our 5 favourite bible verse that celebrates the value of a mother. And many of them come from that ‘handbook of life’ the Book of Proverbs.
Exodus 20:12 : Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
The task of being a mother is so important to God’s plan that it was protected in the Ten Commandments. The knowledge, experience and love that comes from a mother helps her children to prepare for life and living in a way that is blessed by God.
Proverbs 1:8-9: Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
Wisdom and knowledge come with age and experience. A mother’s teaching is important to help her children avoid mistakes being repeated over and over again.
Isaiah 66:13: As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.
A mother’s love is strong and that is recognised by God. He compares the strength of His love to that of the love of a mother.
Proverbs 6:20-22 My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.
A mother’s teaching can last a lifetime. Long after a child has left home and made their own way in life, a mother’s teaching will be a guide throughout life. A mother’s teaching can prepare the foundation for a long and safe life.
Proverbs 31:28: Her children arise and call her blessed.
The true value of a mother does not become apparent for many years. But through constant love, compassion and guidance a child recognises the value of a mother and sees the blessings that come from her action.
So often in today’s society, the role of a mother is undervalued, but the Bible brings out the essential place a mother has in a family.
